BOKU BIOBLITZ | Internationale Biodiversity Challenge der ICA Universities
Die BOKU BIOBLITZ Biodiversity Challenge 2024 in Kooperation mit 18 anderen europäischen Universitäten der Association for European Life Science Universities (ICA) findet von Mai bis Juni bei uns statt und wir laden alle interessierten Studierenden, Lehrenden und Angestellten der BOKU ein, daran mitzuwirken!
Im Zeitraum von 02.05.-28.06. werden an verschiedenen BOKU-Standorten Artenmeldungen gesammelt und in der internationalen Biodiversity Challenge der ICA-Universities gelistet.
Die Teilnahme an der Challenge ist ganz einfach: Mit der ObsIdentify App oder über observation.org können Teilnehmer*innen gesichtete, heimische Arten im BOKU- Challengegebiet (Standorte in Wien und außerhalb) hochladen und bestimmen. Die fotografierten Arten können auch mithilfe der App identifiziert werden und werden automatisch zur Challenge im Gebiet gezählt.
In der App ist es auch möglich, nur Bilder einer unbestimmten Art hochzuladen und die Community der App beim Bestimmen um Rat zu fragen (ähnlich wie es auch bei iNaturalist möglich ist).
- Am 13. Mai wird am BOKU-Campus im Bereich Mendelhaus/Arboretum eine Kick-Off-Exkursion zum gemeinsamen Start stattfinden. Von 13:00-14:00 gibt es eine Einführung in die Datenaufnahme und eine erste Artensuche im Mendelhaus-Garten mit Bienenexpertin Sabine Schoder und Vogelkundler/Wildtierbiologe Paul Griessberger!

Generell soll das Ziel sein, unser Interesse auf die Biodiversität vor unserer Haustür zu öffnen und viele Mitwirkende zu motivieren, möglichst viele Arten an unseren Uni-Standorten zu finden.
Hinweis: Generell sollen wildlebende Arten erhoben werden, somit bitte keine Blumenbeete und Straßenbäume miteinbeziehen!

The BOKU BIOBLITZ Biodiversity Challenge 2024, in cooperation with 18 other European universities of the Association for European Life Science Universities (ICA), will take place from May to June at our university and we invite all interested students, faculty, and staff to participate!
From 02.05.-28.06., species sightings will be collected at various BOKU locations and listed in the international Biodiversity Challenge of the ICA universities. Participation in the challenge is quite simple: using the ObsIdentify app or observation.org, participants can upload and identify sightings of native species in the BOKU challenge area (locations in Vienna and beyond). Photographed species can also be identified via the app and will be automatically counted towards the challenge. During the aforementioned period, all entered sightings on campus in these areas will be automatically added to the challenge; they only need to be entered into the observation.org platform or the associated ObsIdentify app. In the app, it is also possible to upload pictures of an unidentified species and ask the app's community for help in its identification (similarly to iNaturalist).
- On May 13th, the Kick-Off excursion with bee expert Sabine Schoder and bird-expert Paul Griessberger will take place at Mendelhaus/ Arboretum. Together we will explore Mendelgarten from 1 pm - 2 pm and identify the wild species that we come across!

In general, the goal is to open our interest in the biodiversity at our doorstep and motivate as many participants as possible to find as many species as possible at our university locations.
Note: The aim is to record wild species, so please do not include flower beds and planted trees!

Networking Biodiversity - Kick-Off Event des Biodiversitätsclusters
Als Kick-Off Veranstaltung fand am 08. März 2024 das Vernetzungsevent „Networking Biodiversity“ statt, bei dem der BOKU-Biodiversitätscluster einer breiten Gemeinschaft an interessierten Wissenschaftler:innen der BOKU vorgestellt und ihnen die Möglichkeit zur Mitwirkung an der Etablierung einer wissenschaftlichen Vernetzungsebene für den Themenbereich Biodiversität an der BOKU angeboten wurde.
Durch die Teilnahme von etwa 150 Forscher:innen, Lehrenden und (Master-)Studierenden, deren Abschlussarbeit thematisch im Kontext angesiedelt ist, aus 33 Instituten von 14 der 15 universitätseigenen Departments wurde das hohe Potential der BOKU als Hotspot der Biodiversitätsforschung bestätigt. Anhand von Concept Sheets brachten sich die Teilnehmenden aus der kompletten Bandbreite der BOKU-Forschungsdisziplinen in die Vernetzungsaktivität ein, in dem sie in Kleingruppen ihre Projekte und Arbeitsthemen im Biodiversitätsbereich vorstellten.
Umrahmt wurde diese Möglichkeit zum Austausch, zur Diskussion und zur Anbahnung zukünftiger Kooperationen von einer Eröffnungsrede unserer Rektorin Eva Schulev-Steindl und der Keynote zu „Integrated Spatial Planning for Nature and People“ von Piero Visconti des International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). Dieser thematische Rahmen unterstrich die Bedeutung eines ganzheitlichen Ansatzes in der Biodiversitätsforschung und beschrieb mögliche Rollen der BOKU in der Entwicklung von Lösungsstrategien für Naturschutz- und Renaturierungsplanung über Ökosystemgrenzen hinweg.
Neben der Vernetzung von Biodiversitätsforscher:innen an der BOKU, lag der Fokus deshalb auch auf der gemeinsamen Entwicklung von Zukunftsperspektiven für den Biodiversitätscluster als Netzwerk von verschiedensten Akteur:innen in den Bereichen Forschung, Lehre und der Kommunikation mit der Öffentlichkeit (sog. Third Mission).

As a kick-off event for the BOKU Biodiversity Cluster, "Networking Biodiversity" took place on March 8, 2024. The overall aim was to introduce the BOKU Biodiversity Cluster to a broad community of interested BOKU scientists, offering them the opportunity to participate in establishing a scientific networking platform for biodiversity research at BOKU.
With approximately 150 researchers, educators, and (master's) students whose thesis work is thematically related from 33 institutes of 14 of the University's departments, the high potential of BOKU as a hotspot for biodiversity research was confirmed. In small groups, participants from the full spectrum of BOKU research disciplines engaged in networking activities by presenting their projects and work in the field of biodiversity through concept sheets.
This opportunity for exchange, discussion, and the opportunity of future collaborations was framed by an opening speech from our Rector, Eva Schulev-Steindl, and a keynote on "Integrated Spatial Planning for Nature and People" by Piero Visconti of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). This thematic framework highlighted the importance of a holistic approach in biodiversity research and described possible roles of BOKU in developing solutions for nature conservation and restoration planning across ecosystem boundaries.
In addition to networking with fellow biodiversity researchers at BOKU, the focus of this event was also on the collaborative development of future perspectives for the BOKU Biodiversity Cluster as a network of various actors in research, education, and communication with the public (the so-called Third Mission).
