Microalgae glycoproteins win Poster-Prize at the IMSC

Réka Tünde Mócsai has got the poster award at the IMSC 2018 (22nd International Mass Spec Conference) in Florence, Italy.

Réka, doctoral student in the Altmann group of the Chemistry Department, demonstrated a striking variety of N-glycan structures on proteins of microalgae of the genus Chlorella. Her findings affect considerations on using algae as production hosts for recombinant proteins and they may pave new ways into the maze of algal taxanomy. With a range of methods such as monosaccharide analysis by RP-HPLC, MALDI-TOF MS, graphitic carbon chromatography with ESI-MS/MS detection, GC-MS and NMR analysis (by courtesy of Dr. Paul Kosma) she demonstrated the occurrence of several structural features hitherto not seen on asparagine-linked oligosaccharides as e.g. O-methylation (new in plants), arabinose and galactofuranose.
