Best Presentation Award

Dr. Hassan Amer, Division of Chemistry of Renewable Resources, has won the Best Presentation Award at RR2017 conference (Renewable Plant Resources – Chemistry, Technology, Medicine) in St. Petersburg.

Dr. Hassan Amer, currently scientist and visiting professor at the Department of Chemistry, Division of Chemistry of Renewable Resources, has won the Best Presentation Award at the RR2017 conference (Renewable Plant Resources – Chemistry, Technology, Medicine) in St. Petersburg. Dr. Amer has been working in the framework of the FLIPPR (Future Lignin and Pulp Processing Research) project. At the same time, he is professor at the National Research Center Cairo, Egypt. His lecture „Surface hydrophobization of cellulosic pulps using residual plant oils as green reaction media“ addressed the usage of plant oil residues – which normally are burnt as waste – as reaction media for the hydrophobization of cellulosic materials. Such surface modification of celluloses is, for instance, required to render nanocellulosic reinforcement agents compatible with other synthetic polymeric components in composite materials. By the use of the plant oils, which can be readily recycled and re-used, conventional organic solvents are avoided – in best agreement with green chemistry principles.
