The Weltmuseum Wien, previously known as Museum für Völkerkunde/Museum of Ethnology, has one of the world's most important collections of unique cultural treasures from all five continents, including an outstanding North America collection. Currently undergoing extensive refurbishment, it will be reopened in October of 2017.

Steven Engelsman was appointed director of the Weltmuseum Wien in 2012 with a brief to renovate the galleries and install new permanent displays. He previously served as director general of the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden, The Netherlands, and as curator at the Museum Boerhaave, also in Leiden. Dr. Engelsman earned a doctorate in history of mathematics.
