On the 14th of November, a presentation took place at BOKU that explored the interconnectedness of Iraq´s challenges and the path to a sustainable future.

The interplay of climate change, political tensions and socio-economic factors was being discussed. Special focus was given to the impact this has on a population that is predominantly displaced and enduring years in refugee camps.

Jamal Dakheel Rasho (executive director DOP organization Iraq) gave an overview of the many challenges Iraq faces. He then presented the Project “Supporting the climate-friendly sustainable development of a rural community in a semiarid region in the north of Iraq (Sinjar-Ninawa)”. The presentation emphasized the agroecological approach of the project and the significant benefits it brings, particularly for women.

Jesús García Latorre (Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action) held a presentation on supporting local and indigenous communities through cooperation projects. He talked about the importance of local experts and participatory approaches, emphasizing this by giving some insights from already existing projects.

The event was part of the course “Project Design and SDGs”. It was organized in cooperation with the Cluster of Development Research, the Centre for Global Change and Sustainability, the Austrian Development Cooperation and the Austrian Ministry for Climate Action.
