Unpacked: Food packaging in the spotlight
Despite the fact that most food products sold to consumers are having some sort of packaging, packaging itself is not without controversy. The Institute of Waste Management (ABF-BOKU) is currently working on the FFG-project "Stop Waste - Save Food", which deals with optimized packaging.
Thereby, the central topics are the improved protection aspect as well as the shelf life extension. These measures should lead to a sustainable reduction of food waste.
Whether optimized packaging fulfils its purpose and what form of packaging is offered in shops can, to some extent, be influenced through consumer preferences. From a waste management perspective, it is necessary to learn more about the behaviour of consumers in order to be able to combine their preferences with the optimal packaging solutions from an environmental point of view. Therefore, we invite you to participate in our survey www.iss-auf.at!!
How do you store your food at home? Which products are most likely to end up in waste and how do you perceive different types of packaging?
We are looking forward to learn more about it!
