The lecture presents current trends in industry and academia for the continuous manufacturing of bioproducts, with a focus on biopharmaceutical products.
A special focus will be on the following unit operations:
Upstream
- Chemostat
- Turbidostat
- Perfusion culture
Downstream
- Simulated moving bed chromatography
- Periodic counter current chromatography
- Continuous counter current extraction
The special considerations that need to be taken into account for continuous operation will be discussed in contrast to batch operation. This lecture will expand the content of the lectures Up- and Downstream processing (791357), Bioprocess Engineering (791350) and Grundlagen Bioprozesstechnik (791120) to continuous manufacturing
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Basic knowledge of chemical engineering and bioprocesses. This includes basics in thermodynamics and basic knowledge for fermentation and cell biology.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
Students will be able to understand continuous processes and processes, will be able to describe them scientifically and from an engineering standpoint, and will be able to select the right methods for continuous production of biopharmaceuticals.
