Lehrinhalt

Agricultural policy in the U.S. and the effects of immigration laws on the agricultural sector:
-Domestic and international government policies affecting agriculture and agribusinesses.
-Policy alternatives aimed at solving economic and environmental problems of the food and agricultural sector are identified and evaluated.
-Discussion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which gets the largest funding share in the farm bill.
- Immigration laws in the U.S. and their effects on agricultural labour and beyond.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic knowledge of intermediate undergraduate level microeconomics and econometrics.

Lehrziel

Upon completion of the course, students are able to
- have a good understanding of the U.S. agricultural policy and its main components
- explain how the programs affects agricultural productivity and its competitiveness
-explain how agricultural policy affects environmental outcomes
-explain how SNAP works and why it is important
-name and discuss some of the major immigration laws in the U.S. during the last two decades and their main effects on the agricultural sector
- discuss why agricultural policy is so important in the EU and how it does affect the competitiveness of the agricultural sector.
