Provide a bridge between genetic and evolutionary theory and practice needed for applied questions in aquatic ecology, restoration, sustainable management of aquatic resources, conservation and nature protection. Provide instruction and background on how to design applied genetic studies, how to sample and store tissues for DNA or RNA extraction. A practical exercise in DNA extraction will be carried out and the full range of DNA/RNA extraction methods will be presented. Background on theory and application of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) will be given including description of a range of applications, protocols and troubleshooting. Background on theory and application of a range of genetic markers (microsatellites, DNA sequencing, AFLP analysis) including a brief introduction into so-called “next generation sequencing” (NGS). An introduction into a range of genetic data analysis techniques including hands-on learning with various software packages including internet resources designed for population genetic analysis will be given.
- Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)
Students do not require specialised genetic expertise, but fundamental knowledge in genetics and ecology is expected
After successful completion of this module, participants are able to:
•Understand basic principles in population genetics, with emphasis on applied examples in fishery management and protection;
•Discuss basic principles in evolutionary science relevant to aquatic habitat restoration, fishery management and conservation;
•Develop study designs relevant to applied questions and management in
