•commonly applied natural isotopic systems (light stable isotopes (H, C, N, O, S) and heavy stable isotopes (Sr, Pb, U). Other isotopic systems.
•Why do isotopes fractionate in nature?

Techniques for the analysis of isotope ratios
•mass spectrometry (IRMS, ICP-MS, GDMS, TIMS, SIMS, AMS, RIMS)
•NMR
•alpha and gamma spectrometry
•cavity ring down spectroscopy, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

Fields of applications of natural isotopic systems in ecosystem research.

Applications of isotope spikes
•enriched natural stable isotopic spikes
•radioactive markers

Application of isotope dilution and isotope pattern deconvolution to applied science.

Excursion to institutions applying isotope ratio tools in ecosystem research.

Basic background in chemistry and analytical chemistry; 911351 is highly recommended as complementary course; please note that the excursions are organized together with 911351)

Lehrziel

After completion of the course the students will have a comprehensive knowledge about the use and application of isotopic methods along with an overview of the methods available (limits and potentials). They are able to decide on the most appropriate approach for specific research questions in the field of ecosystem research. They have the proper tools for data reduction when applying enriched stable isotopes.
