Lehrinhalt

The central theme of this lecture is the application of enzymes in biocatalysis and the design of an enzymatic process. Several aspects of enzymatic process engineering will be discussed:
1) Definition of terms and introduction to biotechnology, biotransformations and biocatalysis
2) Kinetics of the catalyst (microkinetics) - enzymology and enzyme kinetics
3) Reactor kinetics (macrokinetics): mass- and heat transfer,
4) Reactor types (batch-, plug-flow-, CSTR, and micro reactors)
5) Scale-up
6) Enzyme immobilization – mass-transfer restrictions
7) Enzyme-membrane reactors
8) Mechanisms of enzyme inactivation
9) Solvents in enzymatic reactions

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Participants will have to recall their knowledge from different lectures and disciplines in the field of biotechnology and create new connections.

Lehrziel

After the course and successful examination students of this course can:
1) Describe essential concepts of reaction kinetics and reactor types.
2) Recall important kinetic and process parameters which affect biochemical reactions and their application in industrial scale processes
3) Interpret process diagrams and performance numbers
4) Apply fundamental principles of biocatalysis for the engineering of a biochemical reaction
6) Determine the influence of kinetic constants on an enzymatic process
7) Evaluate biocatalytic processes and solve problems caused by non-ideal enzymes and poor reaction conditions
