Cemeteries are heterotopias, places of transition, memory, remembrance and contemplation. They have always been collective ritual sites, a specific form of social life, of emotional and metaphysical experiences. They also were an efficient instrument of the ideological control in the society. At the same time they are complete, functional and formal organisms. They vary in many aspects, among else in the way how they respond to specific cultural ways of dealing with the disposal of the dead, and the organization of the burial (rites and) places. To meet requirements of such a demanding teleology many effort had to be put into creating cemeteries as functioning metaphoric landscapes, landscapes of experience and of meaning. With the gradual transfer from the res ecclesiastica to the res publica a certain sense of rigor and magic was lost. Starting from the Friedhof der Namenlosen, this seminar will, through lectures, readings, discussions and design sessions, focus on the metaphorical power of design taking as it subject the spatial and cultural aspects of design of cemeteries, traditional and contemporary ways of burial and their translation in the design of a contemporary place of memory. We will investigate the conventions and exceptions in our cultural relationship to death, the metaphors attached and, through the search for rigor and magic, the potential of landscape design to symbolize and evoke feelings.
The seminar will include a site visit, written and oral interpretation as well as the interpretation by drawing. This will be followed by a short new-cemetery design experiment on the actual site of the Südwestfriedhof.
