Lehrinhalt

‘Development Innovation’ looks at theory and practice of ‘development’ with a focus on natural resource management.

Usually, development is understood as an effort to overcome a lack of some kind in a specific region. It has been a powerful concept over the past 50 years.

Today, both the theoretical justification of development and its practice are in a crisis – yet, as global inequalities persist, the questions: “Should we intervene? How should we intervene? What are the consequences of intervention?” continue to be highly relevant.

In ‘Development Innovation’, we identify main actors in development from the 1960s till today. By analyzing writings and actions of these actors, we can summarize dominant development theory and action. This will enable us to recognize patterns of interaction and understand the crisis of development today. Together, we will debate on future options to address global development challenges.

The course ‘Development Innovation’ is an entry point to the teaching program of the Centre for Development Research at BOKU. It will provide you with the understanding and vocabulary to benefit from the advanced courses on systems, change processes and methods.
