This interdisciplinary course focuses on lessons learned from applied development research projects and their potential contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals SDGs (e.g. poverty reduction, food security, sustainable natural resource management);
Case studies from current BOKU research projects in the Global South (e.g. water management, farm health, capacity building in socio- ecology or sustainable animal breeding) will illustrate how research for development is implemented in practice. Based on this, you will draft a research for development project from the perspective of your favorite scientific discipline.
-Step 1 Experience from practice: BOKU researchers share experiences about working in the Global South.
-Step 2 The building blocks of a research for development project: From development challenge to research question to project plan.
-Step 3 Practical work: Drafting your own research for development project based on your learning in the course and your scientific background.
-Step 4 Implementation (optional): You present your ideas, findings and the draft proposal at the Global Challenge University Alliance SDG symposium in April 2018 at BOKU.
- Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)
Genuine interest in development research
After this lecture, the students will be able:
# to understand current principles and practices in research for development with the potential to contribute to the SDGs.
# to draft a research for development project from project idea to research question to a basic implementation plan.
# to create different trans- and interdisciplinary approaches to translate theoretical development research ideas into practical research proposals and to relate their own scientific discipline and research interest to the SDGs.
# to evaluate different styles of research proposals for applied development.
# to present their own research ideas to a wider audience.
