Lehrinhalt

Ethnobotany forms a sub-discipline of ethnobiology research. Ethnobotany describes, analyses and explains the interaction between people and plants. This includes the cultivation, harvest and use of plants for e.g. food, medicine, construction, craft and customs.

Throughout this lecture you will become acquainted with definitions of terms, concepts and theories related to ethnobotany. You will receive both botanical and anthropological training, learning how to conduct interdisciplinary ethnobotanical research. Furthermore, you will understand

1)the relevance of ethnobotany for the sustainable management of natural plant resources,
2)get to know different ethnobotanical domains based on various case studies e.g. plants in the context of migration, the use of wild plants and the relevance of belief systems for the management of natural resources, etc.,
3)additionally, you will get to know the most influential ethnobotanical scientific societies and journals, scientific institutions and websites dealing with ethnobotany.

The lectures will include many practical exercises, a herbal walk, interactive methods and group discussions.

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Good knowledge of English language. This lecture is required for participation to the course Ethnobotanical Research and Application (933.337).

By completing this course, you will:
