Kick-off Meeting

The meeting took place under the cordial hospitality of the Monastery Schlägl. Welcomed by the Abot Martin Felhofer, host of the meeting, and the ITM coordinator Hubert Hasenauer, 39 persons: scientists, company representatives, members of the quality assurance panel and other invited guests performed a successful Kick-off of the ITM project.

The first half-day was dedicated to the introduction to the project by the coordinator and short presentations of the meeting participants.

In the afternoon there was an excursion to the forests of the Prämonstratenser Monastery Schlägl, lead by Heinz Reininger, the former forest manager of the monastery’s forest.

as well as the scientific contents of the 1. Workpackage (Characzerizing tree growth models).

Then all partizipants went, according to their role in ITM, to group sessions of scientists, company representatives and the quality assurance panel, respectively. These groups focused on their specific expectations on ITM and particularly on the description of the milestones of workpackage 1. The results have then been presented in the following final plenary session. Venue and date of the next ITM meeting (First milestone meeting) have been fixed.

We express our cordial thanks to Prof. Angelo Oliveira and Mr. Miguel Teles Branco and their team for the excellent organization of the meeting and the field excursion. 34 persons from the ITM consortium attended to the main goals of the First ITM Milestone:

An excursion to the cork oak forest area (Quinta Grande, Coruche) and to the cork industry unit EQUIPAR gave a very interesting insight into the procedures of cork oak forest production, cork oak debarking and the cork processing procedures at the cork factory.

35 ITM participants enjoyed the excellent organization and hospitality at the meeting. Thanks to Dr. Gregor Chatziphilippidis and Mr. Gabriel Spyroglou.
The purpose and main focus of the meeting was to review and discuss the progress of the Research Workpackages (WPs 2-5).
Further there was a demonstration af all models used in ITM (MOSES, PROGNAUS, SILVA, BWINPRO, STAND, CORKFITS), which gave the consortium the opportunity to use the different models and to become acquainted with the specific features.
An excursion gave an interesting insight into the experimental plots of the Forest Research Institute, where the effects of different thinning of Quercus frainetto coppice forests are investigated. These plots, near Petrokerasa, are used for the implementation of the Greek model for coppice forests developed within ITM.

3.Milestone Meeting 8. 11. – 1. 12. 2002

This meeting will be held in Joensuu (Finland) and is open to the whole ITM consortium.
