For me personally this is one of the Highlights every November. A tiny village somewhere in the middle of nowhere (but still reachable by train) organises a wine-walk and open-wine-cellar event. Seriously: GO THERE! It is so much fun! :D

----------------

The little village “Hohenruppersdorf” that is full with wineries organizes this even every year – now already for the 38th time! Basically you go there, register for the walk, walk 13 kilometers through the hills and vineyards (stopping every now and then for a drink at a winery) until you come back to the village. In the afternoon and evening all the wineries in the village are open too, you can “buy” a wine glass (10€) and try wines from all the different producers for free with this glass. LOTS of wine. ;)

Since all the information on their website is in German, here is a summary of Infos:

- How to get there? Since the town is no longer serviced by train, there are shuttle busses from “Wolkersdorf” (reachable by train, check www.oebb.at or www.vor.at) at 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00. The bus costs 3€ and they ask you to call or write them in advance: www.leopoldiwandertag.at/wandertag-2013/kontakt/betreff-2/ or 0664/4902622
Shuttles go back to Wolkersdorf at 15:00, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00 and 20:00.

- The route: Here you find the way to walk (when registering there you will get a map too). But it is anyways not hard to find the way. - registration: If you want a hand-made wooden medal: 6,50€, otherwise 1,50€ (this is what it says online. I am not 100% sure so please ask there; I couldn’t quite figure out if those 1,50€ are really possible for everyone). Registration is at the townhall (Gemeindeamt) in the village. Usually there is also something to win if you registered (mostly a bottle of wine).

- start: between 7:00 and 12:00; if you want to receive a medal you should be finished by 16:00 - finish: make sure to plan a little while for staying in the village in the end to try all their wine!! If you have questions about it - just write to buddy@boku.ac.at!
