The last cold and grey days are best spent inside - with tea, coffee, a book and/or good company. Here are some places where you will finda nice atmosphere and some good coffee or tea. I have asked all my colleagues for their favourite place and recommendations - here is a nice list for you to try! :) Traditional Kaffeehäuser (good for cakes and sweet stuff too): - Café Central: Might seem touristy, but really it is a favourite of Viennese people as well. Beautiful architecture, a little pricey (first district) but definitely worth a visit! - Café Sperl: Beautiful, old style, definitely Kaffehaus-flair and in a good location. My personal favourite in this category. Not too cheap either, but still the one that was most mentioned when I asked around here in the office! - Café Westend: Near Westbahnhof, with the worn-down atmosphere that Kaffeehäuser outside the first district should and need to have. A little dusty, very big, and with lots of (itnernational) newspapers! - Café Hummel: Located in the 8th district, well away from the tourists, but still definitely one of the "seeming-a-bit-fancy" like places where waiters still wear the typical suit and shirt. Really good also for dinner (which you get at all Viennese Coffeehouses)! - Café Bräunerhof: Opinions are divergent at this one - some like it for its cosiness and live-music, some don't. Well, I guess, just try! - Café Prückel: Definitely one of hte most-mentioned ones too, and a personal favourite of mine as well. 60s-atmosphere, slightly grumpy waiters, sometimes live piano music - perfectly like it should be! - Some more top-picks in this category: Café Landtmann (very fancy, but very Viennese too); Café Demel (go there for a real imperial atmosphere and probably some of the very best cakes in town!); Café Sacher; Café Grinsteindl (apparently one of the top-picks for journalists, politicians and the like); the Café on Kahlenberg (nice view included); the Café of Hotel Méridien (nice view included too); Café Schopenhauer (18th district); Café Korb; More pub-like Cafés (equally traditional, but a different style and more for a beer rather than coffee): - Café Alt-Wien: in the first district, my personal favourite. Smokey, worn-down, dark and cosy. - "Wratschko": 7th district, same adjectives as above also describe it very well, plus real good food. - Café Bendl: Personally I have not been there, but heard about it a couple of times. Try and let me know how it was! :D Hip, new, non-traditiona picks: - Phil: nice music, nice food, nice coffee - and a bookstore at the same time! - Café Europa: definitely a real "institution" in the 6th district. Every Viennese student knows this place! - Café Espresso: hip and artistic, with music on the weekends - Café "people on caffeine": please try this one and tell me about it too. Suggested by a colleague, but I haven't been there yet - still I'm amazed by the cool name. Plus aparrently it is IN a church! - Weltcafé: well-known to every student, delicious breakfast, soups and coffee - Das Ulrich: from AMAZING breakfast to great cocktails: you get it all here! Das noch graue Frühlingswetter ist doch perfekt für Tee, Kaffee, ein Buch und/oder gute Gesellschaft, in warmer, gemütlicher Atmosphäre. Und genau dafür sind Wiener kaffeehäuser wie geschaffen! Hier findet ihr eine Sammlung der Vorschläge von mir und meinen KollegInnen am ZIB - also nichts wie los und ausprobieren! :) Da ich leider gerade sehr viel Zeit auf die englischen Beschreibungen verwendet habe müsst ihr leider momentan mit wirklich kurzen Anmerkungen Vorlieb nehmen - das tut mir leid, aber am besten ist sowieso, ihr probiert selbst alle durch! ;) Traditionalle Kaffeehäuser (für Kaffee und Kuchen): - Café Central: etwas touristisch, trotzdem gut und schön!
