Semmering Railway

Scope of the Conference

This meeting will bring together academic science and industrial know-how in order to discuss physiological aspects of recombinant protein production in different host organisms. A special feature will be the comparison of different classes of host cells, mainly bacteria, yeasts, filamentous fungi and animal cells.

Host cell physiology plays a key role in the production of recombinant proteins. Growth and nutrient utilisation, as well as key properties of the product, depend on the physiological characteristics of the host. Many of these features follow similar patterns in all important host organisms, e.g. protein folding and secretion, stress responses, by-product formation, genetic stability or copy number effects.

It is not common practice to compare these properties between different classes of host organisms. To close the gap, this conference will treat all major groups of host cells simultaneously.

Hotel Panhans

Conference Venue and Accommodation

Hotel Panhans, Semmering, Austria.
The Semmering is a romantic mountain area about 95 km south of Vienna. The scenic landscape, combining steep limestone cliffs with wide, wooded valleys has attracted visitors for more than 100 years. The arrival by train via the Semmering Railway, a pioneering mountain railroad opened in 1854, is an attraction by itself. The Hotel Panhans, opened in 1888, was one of the meeting places of the Viennese society and today it ideally combines turn-of-the-century flair with modern comfort.

Due to the unexpected interest, additional rooms have been booked in the nearby Kurhotel Dr. Stühlinger in 10 min. walking distance. The Kurhotel Stühlinger is equally beautifully situated and offers the same comfort as the Hotel Panhans.
However, all meals (except breakfast) will be held in the Hotel Panhans for all participants.

The conference fee includes all meals from Thursday lunch to Sunday morning, including the conference dinner on Saturday evening.
Those of you who desire a special diet (e.g. vegetarian) are asked to inform the organisers via e-mail: efb103@iam.boku.ac.at

Preliminary Programme

The conference will encompass plenary lectures, oral sessions and poster sessions. Oral sessions will consist of invited lectures and lectures selected from communicated abstracts.
Speakers will include: W.E. Bentley (USA), J. Hanak (UK) A.C. Hiatt (USA), R.J. Kaufman (USA), S. Keränen (FI), T. Nyström (S), P.W. Postma (NL), R. Rudolph (D), J.R. Swartz (USA), A.S. Spirin (RU), R. Wagner (D), H. Weir (UK).

Tentative sessions

  • Metabolic burden and stress responses
  • Nutrition and by-product formation
  • Protein folding
  • Protein secretion
  • Genetic stability and gene copy number effects
  • Transcription, translation, relation of product formation to growth
  • Metabolic and cell engineering for improved protein production

Take a look at the Preliminary Programme and the Detailed Lecture Programme (new).

Scientific programme from Thursday, October 5, after lunch to Saturday, October 7, evening.
Departure: Sunday, October 8.

Registration

The conference fee will include registration, hotel accommodation and all meals from Thursday lunch to Sunday morning. The late registration fee is 520 EUR (7155 ATS) for a double room per person, and 585 EUR (8050 ATS) for a single room.

The conference is practically booked out. If you wish to register, please send an e-mail, and you will be notified on the availability of a room.

To register, fill in the registration form and send it together with your preferred mode of payment to:

We highly appreciate receiving your personal data by e-mail, but - for safety reasons - please DO NOT send credit card information via e-mail.

Oral and Poster Presentations

For oral presentations, a computer projector, slide projector and overhead projector will be available. If you plan to use the computer projector, please bring also transparencies or slides with you. The computer will run under Windows 98 with the Office 97 package, so the prefered data format will be MS Power Point 97. The files can be transported either on a 3½" diskette or on a CD-ROM.

Posters can be max. 145 cm high and 118 cm wide. All posters will be on display during the whole conference. Authors are asked to be available at their posters during the poster sessions on Friday and Saturday.

Travel Information

How to reach the Semmering:

by air:

Vienna International Airport
By bus to Südbahnhof, then by train (see below).
The bus leaves outside the arrival hall. During daytime there is a public bus (Vienna Airport Lines) every half hour at 25 and 55 minutes past the full hour. Travel time to Südbahnhof is approximately 20 minutes.

For those who fly on Thursday, Oct. 5, morning, a shuttle bus will be organised directly from Vienna International Airport to Semmering. Depending on the request, one or more busses will leave not later than 12:00 a.m. from the airport, and arrive at appr. 1:30 p.m. The costs of appr. 250,- ATS will be charged at the conference.
To book the shuttle from the airport, please return the AIRPORT SHUTTLE FORM.

by train:

The Semmering is located at the international rail connection Vienna - Graz - Italy / Slovenia. Travel time from Vienna South Railway Station (Südbahnhof) is between 1:40 and 2:00 hours. Take a look at an excerpt of the train schedule from and to Vienna, or search the official train schedule.
Participants arriving by train can book a car shuttle to the Hotel Panhans and Hotel Stühlinger. The costs will be charged at the conference. To book the shuttle from the Semmering railway station, please return the SEMMERING SHUTTLE FORM.

by car:

from north (Vienna): highway A2, then S6
from south / west: highway S6
