Bioenergy 2020

Bioenergy 2020

The research area Bioconversion and Biogas Systems (Area 3) is located in Tulln as part of the Bioenergy 2020+ competence center. A focus of this work involves microbiological processes for the supply of renewable energy from biomass and a variety of waste streams. Concepts for the cascading utilization of resources are developed and tested in close collaboration with our partners from industry. The Hydrofinery project acts as an example for the future-oriented research in Tulln: Wind and solar power are seen as the most promising renewable energies to reach EU’s 20-20-20 targets. However, these energy productions are not constant causing shortterm electricity peaks that do not correlate with electricity use. Excess electricity can be used for electrolysis to produce hydrogen as a storage form. In cooperation with BOKU (Department of Agrobiotechnology IFA-Tulln, Institute of Environmental Biotechnology) and the K2-competence center ACIB the FFG-project Hydrofinery investigates the production of next generation liquid and gaseous biofuels from CO2 and hydrogen from surplus electricity as alternative energy storage forms. Wood K plus

Wood K plus

The Competence Center for Wood Composites and Wood Chemistry (Wood K plus) functions as a bridge connecting science and business. The research group at the location Tulln (UFT) stands in close cooperation with the BOKU (Institute of Wood Science and Technology) and the Technical University of Vienna (Institute of Chemical Engineering), dealing with the topics and technologies of wood and wood materials as well as with building- and furniture components made of wood. Besides its own technical equipment, the infrastructure of both institutes is available for performing the research work. The technical center of Wood K plus in Tulln provides an area of 450 m2 for equipment and test methods in pilot plant scale in order to develop new methods for industrial applications close to real conditions. Research partners include international enterprises, small and medium sized businesses and organizations. Drawing on its creativity and scientific expertise, Wood K plus guides companies in their projects, from initial fact-finding, idea generation, research to development and even implementation.

acib - innovations from nature

acib - innovations from nature

As a one-stop-shop for the biotech industry, acib transfers the methods of nature into production of the pharmaceutical, food/feed or chemical industries. Results are environmentally friendly and more economical processes or products that are – with optimized costs, improved environmental performance and the scientific progress – an asset to business, research and people. Therefor 200 acib scientists with 30+ years of experience improve the entire production chain in biotechnology through: (i) simulation of bioprocesses, (ii) search for new enzymes, (iii) optimizing production cells and processes, (iv) purification of biotech products, (v) design of new biocatalysts, (vi) development of new synthetic routes and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Research at acib replaces time consuming and costly "trial and error" methods by the latest, knowledge driven approaches to create value for the industrial partners within clearly defined IP rules.
