General overview over the natural conditions in the arid zone, regarding vegetation, land and water resources. General problems of agriculture in relation to water supply and land use in arid zones. Soil genesis and development, soil salinisation and erosion. Discussion about the reasons of desertification and its devastating impacts on the environment and agriculture. Control and management of deserts (extreme desert to dry steppe).

Tentative dates for SS 2018 are:
Preliminary discussion --> 14th of March, 10:00-11:00
Lecture -> 18th, 19th, 20th, 23rd and 24th of April, 9:00-14:00
There is the possibility to modify the dates according to the time availability of both students and lecturer

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students should gain knowledge regarding agriculture and livestock breeding under arid conditions and its future relevance for solving problems regarding global food supply.
