Content

Mass balance is determined for two alpine glaciers in the Goldberg region (Salzburg/Karinthia). In preparatory courses on the basics of glaciers (development, dynamics, inpacts, significance) and their monitoring, as well as on snow physics, avalanches, pollutant deposition, and deportment in high alpine regions are discussed. During the field work the theoretical knowledge will be implemented and different measurements will be made by students. The protocols are subsequently analysed and the mass balance of the glaciers are determined.

Previous knowledge expected

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Gain understanding for glaciers, their dynamics, mass balance, etc. Experience a glacier; field work and measurements under difficult conditions; analysis of data gathered on the glacier.
