What is Satoyama?

SATOYAMA, japanese for “villagemountain“describes originally the hillsides close to villages, which surrounded the paddy-fields. Today it is a term for the traditional Japanese rural landscape including the villages, the inhabitants and their way of life. At the same time it stands also for the relevance of all these for biodiversity and the human quality of life.

  • Is, as a consequence, perfectly in line with the tradition and competence of BOKU University
  • Provides, therefore, a perfect acronym for the BOKU – platform for nature conservation- and biodiversity research
